Tuesday Night Message

Review: Sabbath is the space for not just rest, but remembering the work of God in our lives…remembering that Christ is not Pharaoh…our worth comes from the love of God not the height of our stack of bricks.

Space to receive grace…to re-center and resist the forces of the world.

Make this a priority…not going to be beaten by a chicken sandwich.

Fruitfulness comes from Abiding/Remaining/Resting in the Vine, APART FROM ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING.

There’s an interesting thing about the Fruit/Vine passage and our theme passage this week:

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.

Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly."

If I understand Matthew 11:28ff…Jesus isn’t talking about a once every seven days Sabbath here. A consistent lifestyle that is NOT marked by the Urgent and Frenetic Pressures of Success but by the Unforced Rhythms of Grace...

He's talking about a relationship with Him that transforms the very spirit and paradigm of our every day schedules…

Our restful souls should be witnesses to the presence of Christ in our lives. (an unhurried one)

What does it mean to walk with Christ? Work with Christ?

Walking/Following Jesus means walking the humble path of service, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and manifesting the truths of the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." John 6:29

The Walk IS the work.

Labor is work where the work of Christ is displayed.

The Walk is the Work…Jesus lived out trust/faith/belief in God…

Jesus was faithful in each moment, that’s it…

His ministry wasn’t led by the tyranny of the urgent:

There was deliberation and focus, yes, but there wasn’t a spirit of desperation, or an ambitious quest to expand his impact…

In fact…He seemed to be the opposite…

What could decrease my social status and influence? Let me do that thing. Let me hang out with that tax collector and that women of disreputable character…I’ve got to die for the sins of the world, but sure, I’d love to eat at your house…

Napped during a storm. (Jesus! YOU COULD BE CURING POLIO RIGHT NOW, PS there’s a storm, we’re all going to die.)

LET the children come to me.

Jesus! Lazarus is dying! Hurry UP! Nope

I believe: Jesus demonstrated to us the very abiding relationship He instructed us to live in.

His fruitfulness came from trust and obedience…not a 70 hour work week of accomplishments…or an impressive do list of the MOST IMPORTANT things…

But this is so important:

Jesus didn’t heal everyone. He didn’t even feed everybody. He didn’t solve world hunger or poverty. He was God for 30 years. How many good deeds could HE have done in those 30 years? How come Lazarus got called back but countless others didn't?

The Savior of the universe didn’t have a savior complex…

If Jesus was a camp director, he would’ve been fired…

Your numbers are way down, I heard about that sermon you preached on flesh and blood…did you really say “eat my flesh and drink my blood?”

Disciples: Sons of Thunder, shifty Judas, a tax collector

Activities: Walking on water (he almost drowned but I was right there)

By modern measurements, he had a flash in the pan ministry of novelty that failed and lost 1 of his 12 followers and the others deserted him, including his main man, who denied he even knew him…

Jesus was the real deal. Real Relationship. Real Rest. Real Drink. Real Food.

And He’s inviting us into the real deal Trinitarian fellowship…to do the joyous, mind-boggling work of being the real deal as well…

"My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”John 5:17

Jesus by being fully God, reveals to us who God fully is…

Jesus by being fully human, reveals to us what being fully human can be…

Walking/Working with Jesus means learning to being fully human.

Lord Jesus, meet with us (me) here.

Meet me here in what I’m supposed to be doing.

Reflecting on who God is, trusting. (Hair on the head, cup of cold water)

ABIDING/REMAINING FOR ME…is a posture and position of humility and love…

You never walk by a fruit tree and hear it straining to pass an apple…

there’s a slow, steady submission to the natural processes and the fruit happens…Unforced Rhythms of Grace

You don’t throw an apple seed in the backyard today and pick a ripe apple off the new tree tomorrow.

And when the madness happens…Lord, meet me in the chaos.

**Building a camp fire the next day on the ashes…and it completely catching fire on its own. Amazing what God can do with real coal…**
